English

At Fairways, we strive to help our children develop into articulate and imaginative communicators, who are well-equipped with the basic skills they need to become life-long learners. We aim to ensure all of our children develop a genuine love of language and the written word, through a text-based approach, using the chosen text in writing lessons.

Careful links are made across the curriculum to ensure that children’s English learning is relevant and meaningful; where possible linking our reading, writing and the theme we are covering in our foundation subjects. We ensure that children develop an understanding of how widely reading, writing and speaking is used in everyday life and, therefore, how important and useful the skills are that they are learning.

At Fairways we have split the large subject area of English into 3 strands: Reading, Writing and Phonics. Each of these has a separate curriculum Intent,  Implementation and Impact statement (see below) which constantly weave together. These English sections are led by three different members of staff who together represent the English Team. The predominant link between all three strands is of course, Speaking and Listening.
