Year 2

Tuesday 3rd June 2025

In Geography this half term we will be learning more geographical skills; we will be using directional language and comparing the UK to a non- European country. In our first lesson this week, we discussed what we knew about the points of the compass and described where many countries were in the world in relation to the UK. We then looked at Japan, in particular, and what was north, east, south and west of the country. We then took our new learning outside to direct our Learning Partner to different areas of our school.

In our Art lessons this half term, we are going to be learning about Japanese artists and their artwork. This week, we have learnt about Yayoi Kusama who uses brightly coloured dots to express her thoughts and feelings. We also used her love of pumpkins to create a brightly coloured piece of dotty abstract art.

Year 2 visited Call of the Wild Zoo . The focus for the children's trip was to see animals of different kinds in their habitats and learn more about what these animals need to survive.

Luckily, the weather was on our side and lots of the animals were out of their indoor enclosures to greet us. We had great fun interacting with bugs and beasties, watching an animal training show and penguins and meerkats being fed. We even got to have our lunch in the sun, next to the pretty pink flamingos.

Overall, the children were a credit to Fairways. They treated the zoo with respect and were very aware that there were members of public also visiting the zoo that day too. Well done Year 2.

This week, we had a lovely visit from Don, the tortoise. His visit helped the children write a non-chronological report about these fascinating creatures in their English writing sessions.

In Science, we have been learning about living things and their habitats. This week we took our learning outside and looked for living things in their microhabitats. We had great success in finding lots of tiny living things and the many microhabitats in our school grounds.
