Year 5 have been continuing with their topic on Space and have been having fun finding out more.
We started by getting our heads around the scale of the planets in our solar system, then created our own models to represent the Earth, Sun and Moon to demonstrate night and day. We continued with the Oreo challenge to better understand the phases of the moon and finished with an escapes room quiz.

Year 5 have been studying forces this term in Science. So far, we have used Newton meters to measure force, created parachutes to test air resistance, created toboggans to look at friction. Their final task this week was to create a boat which could move effectively across a body of water. Thye needed to consider water resistance, air resistance, shape, materials and fair testing.

Year 5 have been busy getting in the festive spirt, creating some wonderful crafts.
Thursday 2nd December 2021
In Year 5, we have been looking at materials and how to separate them using different methods.
We have also been learning about things which are soluble and insoluble, and the difference between irreversible and reversible changes and had fun making plastic!

This half term, our theme has been The Highwayman and children have produced some fabulous work based on our English text. They have researched the Georgian period in History and Computing sessions to support their understanding, and have created some excellent pieces of work in Art lessons based on the poem’s characters and settings. Their written work (including poetry, descriptions and character viewpoints) has also demonstrated their enthusiasm for this topic.
Alongside our study of The Highwayman, we have spent a few weeks understanding another narrative poem ‘The Lady of Shalott’ in order to make comparisons between them.
The children have very much enjoyed planning and writing a story version of this challenging text. They have also created beautiful artwork too. We have linked this poem to the story of King Arthur, and children have been taught about recognising the difference between evidence based history, and myths and legends.
Yesterday, a visitor from Rhythm Connections came to teach the children Samba drumming. Some of the children attended an assembly while others attended a workshop. They experienced drumming from Brazil and the rhythms used within a carnival. The children learnt how to memorise the rhythms, using sentences, and how the band leader communicates with the other musicians as they’re marching, dancing and playing.

This half term, children have been learning about subjects in our French lessons.
They are starting to recognise the names of the subjects and express a personal preference.
They have practised speaking to each other, using key phrases, about their likes and dislikes relating to school lessons.
Year 5 have had Southend United in for PE lessons and have thoroughly enjoyed all of the activities, both in class and outside.
They have been taught several fun games such as Knights and Castles, Yoshi and Blob Tag. They have also enjoyed learning about keeping healthy and the importance of a balanced diet, regular exercise and how essential sleep is for them.
Monday 27th September 2021
The children from Year 5 took part in a music workshop. They composed short pieces around feeling words relating to COVID restrictions. Their ideas are going to be collated with other local school children’s and the final compilation will be performed by Southend Choir.

Year 5 have been learning all about materials and their properties. Yesterday, we continued our planned experiment into discovering which material was the best insulator.
We were testing to see which material would keep the ice cube solid for the longest amount of time.
Children wrote a plan involving a question to be answered, a prediction and recognised the variables associated with the experiment.
They then worked in scientific teams, focussing on one material per group, being in charge of checking, recording and sharing the results with the other teams, in order to create a class table of results.
In the afternoon we discussed the outcomes and created a class example of recording results in a different way using line graphs.
This was an excellent opportunity for collaborative and cross curricular learning. The children enjoyed it very much.
