Year 3

Tuesday 16th April 2024

Year 3 had a Roman Day with a visiting guest, Gary, from Portals to the Past.  The children were taught a lot about the Roman empire and had a chance to handle real and replica artefacts. They played some games and had an opportunity to cheer on chariot races. The children also learnt about Roman armour including which parts of the weaponry were most valuable to a Roman soldier, how to march and how to form the 'testudo' or fighting formation.  The final activities involved Emperor James looking on as gladiator 'fights' were performed for his entertainment.

On World Book Day, Year 3 thoroughly enjoyed dressing up as a character from a book. We read an extract from 'The Witches' by Roald Dahl, then created a witches spell using nonsense words and revolting ingredients.

Monday 11th December 2023

Over the last few weeks, Year 3 have been reading The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis. We have been learning how to use the five senses to describe the setting of Narnia. The children had the opportunity to role play as Lucy and walk through the wardrobe, to discover a winter wonderland. They had a great time taking part in the outdoor role play activity and came back to class bursting with ideas for their writing.

Year 3 have been busy again, designing, crafting and constructing a whole host of amazing Robots.  The children all worked really hard, with great inventive ideas about a job or purpose for their robot. When they children bring their designs home, maybe ask them what their robot can do!

Monday 4th December 2023

This term, Year 3 have been looking at the big question: What does it mean to be a Christian in Britain today?

They were really lucky to go to St Aidan’s where Karen took them through the process of Holy Communion. The bread the children were allowed to have hadn’t been blessed, so they were free to eat it if they wanted to. Aadam was surprised that it was in a circle shape, Charlie said, “It melted in your mouth,” and Izzy discovered that it’s not actually bread; it’s a wafer!

Karen showed us some other artefacts that are used in the church and the children were allowed to investigate all everything else in the room.

Karen led a question and answer session. She was really impressed with the children’s knowledge about Communion.

We were all thrilled to have a go at ringing the church bell!

You could ask your child what the photographs are showing and how they're used in church; what ‘Communion’ means (sharing together); anything new they learnt; and what they enjoyed most about the trip.

Tuesday 7th November 2023

As part of our DT and History curriculum, we have been making a Neolithic village. During the process, the children planned their design, annotating their sketches with what they would use for the various parts of the village.  Children then brought their own materials in from home and then spent Friday building their final product.  They had a great time and enjoyed bringing their designs to life with junk modelling.

Library sessions are always our favourite part of the week!

Tuesday 3rd October 2023

Year 3 have been thinking about the question: What does it mean to be a Christian in Britain today?

We were looking at some quotes from the Bible and the children chose who to work with to freeze-frame one of the quotes.

Can you work out from the photographs which quote the children are showing?

These are the quotes:

And don’t forget to do good and share with those in need. Hebrews 13:6

Jesus said, ‘Whenever you eat bread and drink wine, remember me.’ 1 Corinthians 11:26

I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Psalm 104:33

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. Luke 18:1

Which quote/s weren't used? How would you show what is happening in a freeze-frame?

Monday 2nd October 2023

Over the last few weeks, Year 3 have been getting creative in class with a selection of projects.  We have been recreating our own images of Stone Henge from water colour and mixed mediums, planning and recreating our own cave art with pastel and coffee-stained paper, and we have also been cooking our own version of the Stone Age Oat cakes.

In Science, we have been looking at rocks this term and have recently been testing their permeability to decided which category each rock fits in.

In History, we have had an opportunity to make use of 'Now Press Play,' allowing our minds to run free as we were transported into the life of a stone age character

Friday 8th September 2023

It has been a great first week back and despite the hot weather. the children have all been working hard and have got back into the swing of things very quickly.

This week we have started our new topic, 'The Stone Age' and have been looking at time lines and creating art representations of Stonehenge.
