Year 5

Monday 23rd September 2024

Year 5's current Science topic is 'Forces' and we have exploring air resistance. The children were asked to complete experiments to test the effectiveness of a parachute. There were three factors that the children changed during the experiment while keeping everything else the same to ensure a fair test. We tested the following:

  • Length of string

  • Surface area

  • Materials used

Although we were able to draw some findings from these experiments, we realised that dropping the parachute from an even greater height would give us more conclusive results. Taking part in these experiments and analysing the results and how we could better the test allows us to ensure we are critical in our scientific thinking.

Year 5 have been exploring art inspired by their class text 'The Highwayman'. We have been creating landscapes depicting the opening scene from 'The Highwayman' - exploring how perspective can be used to create depth within an artwork. We explored mixing different colours using watercolour paint and applying this to our scenes. Keep your eyes peeled for the finished pieces in a few weeks time!

Welcome back Class 11 and 12! We hope you had a great first day back and enjoyed all of the activities and lessons. Keep up the great work this year!

We jumped straight into our new Science topic today of 'Forces'. We recapped our previous learning but then explored how to measure the pull of objects in Newtons using a force meter. We worked in teams to first make estimates and then compared this with the actual measurements. Great work scientists!
