Year 2

Thursday 21st March 2024

As part of the RE Unit of Work: Who is a Muslim and what do they believe?, Year 2 were lucky enough to have Zil-e visit them today.

Zil-e talked to the children about his experience of being a Muslim and what he believes. He showed the children a video about what happens in a mosque.

Zil-e also brought in some of his own artefacts that he uses when worshipping. He showed the children his prayer mat, Qur'an, rehal, prayer hat and prayer beads.

The children had previously thought about what questions they would like to ask our visitor. Here is a selection of some of the best ones:

  •       How does Allah speak to you?
  •       Where is your mosque?
  •       When was the first mosque built?
  •       How do you wash before you pray?
  •       Do you believe in Jesus?

Zil-e did well to answer all the children's very thought-provoking questions.

You could see if your child can remember any of the answers and information Zil-e gave. Words that might help: Allah, Wudu, Call to prayer, Imam, Qur'an, rehal (the stand for the Qur'an), prayer beads, Ramadan, Eid.

Year 2 have had two fantastic DT days. We really enjoyed getting messy as we built our four wheeled vehicles from our designs. We learnt the process of building a vehicle and safely used saws to cut our axles. We were all very proud of the results.

Year 2 had great fun working in teams to build a mosque! We are working on the big question: Who is a Muslim and what do they believe?

We were focusing particularly on using the right words to describe some things that are important in Islam.

The children labelled the different features in their mosque.

Ask your children to tell you what they know about the symbol for Islam,  minarets, domes, the prayer hall, prayer mats, the washroom, the mihrab and how mosques are decorated.

Year 2 have had a great couple of days, making and burning our Tudor houses as part of our Great Fire of London topic. We talked about why the fire spread so quickly in London, sang London's Burning and enjoyed watching (from a safe distance) as the fire spread through our houses.

Florence Nightingale Day

The children all had a lovely day learning about Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. We completed a variety of linked activities and much fun was had by all.

Friday 8th September 2023

It's been a really exciting first week in Year 2.  As part of our English focus on the story of Little Red Riding Hood, we have been trying to find a mystery creature spotted in the school grounds.  We think it is a big, bad wolf and the children have been making posters and traps to catch the wolf.

News update: We put these traps out after school and are pleased to confirm that the wolf, who was actually really friendly and simply lost, has been caught.  Thank you to all the children for their help.  We will tell you all about it when you come back to school on Monday.
